Dallas Cowboys Will Reportedly Pass On Ashton Jeanty & Sign Former 1st-Round Free Agent Running Back Instead

If the Dallas Cowboys are in the market for a new running back this offseason, the long list of options available may include veterans Najee Harris, Aaron Jones, Nick Chubb, J.K. Dobbins and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.
Avid mock draft readers will see many exercises that have Jerry Jones and the Cowboys taking Jeanty with the No. 12 selection. Dallas’ leading rusher of 2024, Rico Dowdle, is a pending free agent and unlikely to be retained.
Henry McKenna of Fox Sports projected the landing spots for the top NFL free agents of 2025. On his list, McKenna predicted that the Cowboys will win the Najee Harris sweepstakes:
“Never let Jerry Jones surprise you. Expect the unexpected. Folks think that the Cowboys’ owner is going to draft Ashton Jeanty in the first round. What if, instead, Jones brought in Harris to serve as a bruising runner for this offense?
Harris isn’t an explosive runner, but he’s been efficient and violent in ways that might remind folks of Ezekiel Elliott in his prime. It would look strange for Jones to pay Harris when he hasn’t paid Micah Parsons, but things always look strange in Dallas.”
Najee Harris (27 on Sunday) exceeded 1,000 yards rushing in each of his first four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, he’s averaged a measly 3.9 yards per carry in his career and hasn’t come close to matching the 1,200 yards he put up in his rookie year.
The Cowboys have to be aggressive this offseason after a disappointing 7-10 season that led to the departure of head coach Mike McCarthy. Adding more playmakers around Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb is a must for Jerry Jones, and rolling the dice on a productive running back like Harris would be a savvy move.
